Meet the Four 2026 Transportation Technology Tournament Finalists

This year's Transportation Technology Tournament (TTT) drew such strong submissions that the judges expanded the field to four finalist teams. Each finalist team will present its solution at the TTT Finals, taking place Monday, July 20, at the Joint ITE International Annual Meeting in Detroit (more information below). Meet the finalists:
SCSU-Safety Titans — South Carolina State University

Problem statement: Nighttime pedestrian safety at midblock crossings. Their SmartCross Horry concept pairs adaptive lighting with a passive radar system to detect pedestrians and improve visibility at unsignalized midblock crossings after dark, cutting the risk of nighttime pedestrian crashes.

 
Iowa State — Iowa State University

Problem statement:
Secondary crashes on rural interstates. The team proposes a cloud-based queue warning system that uses connected vehicle data to detect slowing and stopped traffic, alerting approaching drivers in time to prevent the secondary crashes that so often follow an initial rural-interstate incident.
UTA Mavericks — University of Texas at Arlington

Problem statement: Pedestrian safety at busy campus intersections. Their solution combines smart crosswalk lighting with a sensorless V2X warning system, delivering real-time alerts to drivers and pedestrians at campus intersections without relying on costly embedded sensors.

 
SCSU-Safely Active — South Carolina State University

Problem statement: Safety for active transportation users on rural arterials. The team's design uses thermal and radar sensing to drive adaptive lighting and variable speed limits along rural arterials, protecting pedestrians and cyclists in low-light, high-speed conditions.

Design Challenge for National Memorial to Fallen Highway Workers in Work Zones

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) invites detailed proposals for the design, construction, and installation of a National Fallen Highway Workers Memorial. Proposals should demonstrate both a compelling design vision and a feasible approach to implementation. This memorial will honor the American workers who have lost their lives in highway work zones and serve as a national symbol of the ongoing commitment to work zone safety. 

Submissions must be emailed to WZMemorial@dot.gov on or before October 20, 2026.

Crash Responders Safety Week All States Planning
July 22, 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. EDT

Description
The CRSW All-States Planning Webinar will be hosted by the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Traffic Incident Management (TIM) Program. This webinar is targeted for communications and public information staff and TIM program managers from every national, state, and local responder community.

During this webinar, the FHWA TIM team will discuss the 2026 CRSW theme and spotlight proven strategies that responder associations and governmental organizations can leverage to achieve our common goal and responsibility for safe, quick roadway clearance. The webinar will feature successful initiatives for promoting CRSW as well as an exercise in collaboration to better promote CRSW in 2026.

Every few seconds, a traffic incident responder puts his or her life on the line to aid crash victims and to safely and quickly clear crashes as well as other traffic incidents that could otherwise result in a secondary crash. Every year traffic incident responders are killed in the line of duty or bear life-long scars from life-altering injuries.

CRSW affords a unique opportunity for every TIM community member to make a difference individually and jointly for roadway safety during traffic incidents. Traffic incident response is a collaborative effort engaging emergency medical services, law enforcement, fire and rescue, public works, towing and recovery, transportation, and other disciplines. TIM communities across the nation can come together this CRSW, taking place November 2-6, 2026, by teaching each other and all road users about our common goal and responsibility for safe, quick roadway clearance.

TMS Emerging Topics Series: Opportunities for TMSs to Use AI/ML
August 11, 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. EDT

Description
This webinar will focus on Opportunities for Traffic Management Systems (TMSs) to Use Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML). 
With exponential availability and growth in data generation capabilities, advancements in data storage/advanced computing techniques (e.g., cloud storage, edge computing), and innovations in algorithmic techniques (e.g., deep learning, machine vision, improved model accuracy), there is a great potential for AI/ML to enhance the safety, mobility, productivity, and operational efficiency of our surface transportation systems including TMSs. This webinar will be used to:
  • Identify potential day-to-day operational functions or tasks performed by TMS operators which may be conducted or improved by using AI/ML (e.g., automate retrieving of video recordings and responding to information requests).
  • Challenges or issues (e.g., ability to modify software, existence of or ability to modify (not proprietary) algorithms, ability to monitor and evaluate the value added versus how functions and actions are currently performed) for agencies to consider when considering potential opportunities to assess the capability, resources, and potential for AI/ML to improve or perform specific TMS functions or actions.
This webinar is part of an ongoing series focused on emerging TMS topics. It is hosted by the Traffic Management Center Pooled Fund Study and co-sponsored by the NOCoE and FHWA.
