The National Operations Center of Excellence to Make Live Announcement of the 2nd Annual TSMO Award Overall Winner and Honor TSMO Champions
Georgia, North Carolina, Washington DOTs and Houston TranStar are in the running to become the 2020 TSMO Award Overall Winner.
WASHINGTON, D.C., September 16, 2020 – The National Operations Center of Excellence (NOCoE), today announced they will reveal the overall winner of NOCoE’s 2nd Annual TSMO Awards on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at 2 p.m. The reveal will take place during a YouTube Live Event, hosted by Jim Tymon, Executive Director of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). The announcement and a conversation between Tymon and the winning agency will take place on NOCoE’s YouTube Live page at: https://youtube.com/c/nocoe/live.
The discipline of Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) aims to get the most out of our existing transportation system by managing and operating networks in an efficient manner that emphasizes safety and mobility. This includes empowering the workforce with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to consistently improve the transportation system.

An effective transportation system supports essential workers in getting to their jobs, enables emergency personnel to respond to those in need, and ensures that all of us can keep moving more safely and reliably. These awards capture the best of those efforts."
The awards celebrate the very best projects, strategies and practices from around the United States. Last December, NOCoE announced four category winners from among 46 entries. Those category winners are finalists for the Overall Winner.
The category winners are:
Agency Improvement: Use of Capability Maturity Model (CMM)
Winner: North Carolina DOT for their “Statewide Central Signal System Initiative”
Best TSMO Project
Winner: Houston TranStar for their “Roadway Flood Warning System”
Best Use of Management of Data to Improve TSMO
Winner: Georgia DOT for their entry on “Improving TSMO in Georgia Using Data”
TSMO Workforce Development
Winner: Washington State DOT for their “TSMO Workforce Development Program”
One team will be announced as the 2020 TSMO Award Overall Winner during the YouTube Live event. Son said, “This year’s category winners demonstrated how the growth of TSMO is truly benefiting the transportation system as a whole. These winners have already helped advance the practice via the case studies they developed on their project and the knowledge sharing they’ve done through the industry.“
The NOCoE TSMO Awards were open to cities, counties, MPOs (RPO, COG), state DOTs and private sector organizations. Winners in each of the four categories highlighted a successful TSMO project undertaken in the last five years that provided a clear benefit to the traveling public. As part of NOCoE’s 2020 TSMO Awards, two industry leaders were announced this week as TSMO Champions of the year. Tony Kratofil, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Engineer for the Michigan Department of Transportation and Faisal Saleem, ITS Branch Manager and MCDOT SMARTDrive Program Manager for the Maricopa County Department of Transportation, were celebrated for their continued leadership and support of TSMO. AASHTO’s Tymon will recognize them during a YouTube Live conversation (same link as above) at 2 p.m. on September 22.
