Infrastructure Readiness for Automated Vehicles: Guidelines and Case Study Insights

Start Date:

-

Summary:

The adoption of Automated Vehicle (AV) technologies is expected to impact the transportation industry by offering new strategies to overcome safety, mobility, and climate resiliency challenges. However, their successful deployment hinges on infrastructure that can meet the requirements of AV systems operating in diverse conditions—what’s known as their Operational Design Domain (ODD). Join us for this NOCoE-hosted webinar highlighting early findings from the NCHRP 20-102(24) project, Infrastructure Modifications to Improve the Operational Conditions of Automated Vehicles.

Presenters will introduce the project-developed AV Infrastructure Guidelines, which offer practical recommendations for infrastructure owner-operators (IOOs) seeking to prepare their transportation networks for AV deployment. The guidance covers key focus areas such as pavement markings, roadway surfaces, signage, signals, work zones, geometric design, policy, and digital infrastructure.

The session will also feature preliminary findings from field and driving simulator-based case studies conducted by the University of Cincinnati, which evaluate how AV technology responds to today’s infrastructure and how modifications to infrastructure influence human perception of AV technologies.

These insights are helping to refine the guidelines to ensure they are actionable and grounded in real-world performance. Attendees will preview the forthcoming TRB WebResource and have the opportunity to provide input prior to its final publication.
